Boaz

I woke up in a library...well okay, I was woken up in a library by a girl.  Yeah, I know...but it is not that way.  The library had just announced that it was closing and she saw me asleep and woke me up.  I didn't know where I was or even who I am.  I panicked--jumpy, scared and very confused.

We walked out in to night together.  She asked where I was from and where was I going---I blerted out that I didn't know and felt hot tears sting my eyes---geez, I am an adult (am I!?).  She suggested that I search my pockets---I did and only found a book, well actually a journal and a coin. A coin that neither one of us recognized.  The journal was red leather and had the name, Boaz, written in it several times.

Well, she said.  I guess that clears one thing up, that must be your name.  Boaz....Boaz...sounds good.  Isn't he someone from the bible???  Yeah, she said...the book of Ruth. C'mon, lets go get something to eat and we can talk more...I think you need to talk.

a new beginning

I sit waiting for the painter to finish...I wish he would be done with it.  You promised me money and I am hungry and cold in this room.  I don't like how he looks at me but when your stomach aches and won't let you sleep you do just about anything.  Mama told me and told me to keep myself from men but orphans of the plague need to look out for themselves.  Ain't nobody going to look after me but myself.  The painter ain't so bad to look at but his beard is scratchy and he smells funny.  Could I get used to it---like the other girls?  I guess so and I would have a place to sleep right.  Oh good, he is coming with a hunk of bread and cheese---can I move now?
